Change is constant. It's literally always happening.
The weather changes, the seasons change, our bodies change, our interests change ... none of which requires input or permission from us. It just happens.
But there's something quite important we need to be aware of when it comes to change. We can resist it or flow with it.
And it probably comes as no surprise to know that resisting change takes a whole lot more energy than flowing with it. Resistance causes stress, angst and makes life a whole lot harder than it needs to be.
Here's an example.
It's only natural that our bodies change as we age. And in fact, it's not just with ageing that our body changes. It's working hard to keep our internal systems functioning well and to heal our external body when we injure ourselves. All of that requires constant change. But so often we ignore signs and symptoms, like needing to rest or to get some fresh air. Instead, we push on and put our body under tremendous strain.
By and large, we resist change. We fight against that inner knowing, our gut feel, that it's time to do something differently. We ignore the feeling that something isn't right, that something needs to change, that we need to make an adjustment, that we need to rest and so on.
And remember, a lot of change simply happens. You don't have control over that. The weather and the seasons are going to change regardless of what you think and do. The more we resist those natural changes, the more stuck, unhappy, and stressed we become.
Thinking about your life (and that includes work) where are you resisting change? Where are you fighting change?
Go ahead and write down what comes to mind. Explore why you're resisting the change. What are you afraid of?
We're 3 weeks into the new year and already I'm talking with people who are tired and stressed. Some are feeling a little bit flat or lost. While others feel incredibly stuck. More often than not, at the core of what they're experiencing, there's a level of resistance to a naturally occurring change.
What are you resisting? And if you were to allow it space, if you were to explore it, what would you realise about this resistance?
Because remember, change is constant but you have a choice. Will you resist it or flow with it?
I'd love to hear from you. Let me know what you're resisting and how you'll start the shift from resistance to flow. Email me here.
