If you could see the consequences of your decisions on your energy, what would you do differently?

Every day we’re faced with a seemingly never-ending stream of decisions. From what you’re going to eat for breakfast and wear to school or work, right through to bigger decisions about life, relationships, health, finances, work and so on.

It can seem like you've just made one decision and there’s another one – lurking around and demanding your attention. Arrgh.

Making decisions can be exhausting. Do you find yourself thinking if only someone else would make it for you or perhaps you ignore them and put them in the ‘too hard’ or ‘not now’ basket. But decisions can be rather needy and when they're ignored they just keep hanging around.

Consequences of your choices and decisions

All of your decisions, even the ones your put off making, have consequences. Some of the consequences will serve you and some won’t. Some will have a greater impact, either positive or negative, than you or I might realise.

Caroline Myss, in her book ‘Anatomy of the Spirit’ says this …

Every choice we make, every thought and feeling we have, is an act of power that has biological, environmental, social, personal and global consequences. We are everywhere our thoughts are and thus our personal responsibility includes our energy contributions.

It’s easy to see the physical outcome of our decisions. You buy the dress you’ve been looking at and lusting after for weeks, it’s now hanging in your wardrobe. You choose to watch a scary movie which makes your heart race and gives you nightmares. You continue to work 10+ hours a day so you constantly feel tired, plus you don’t get to see your friends.

Decisions have tangible, graspable outcomes.

The unseen consequences

But, what about the unseen consequences? The consequences on our energy.

Close your eyes for a moment and see yourself putting all of your energy into a glass jar. You can see through the jar, all the way through to your energy. Does your energy feel light or heavy? Is your energy sparkly or dull? Perhaps it's patchy – a mix of light and heavy, sparkly and dull.

Every decision you make has an immediate impact on your energy. Keep the image of your the glass jar in mind, you can see and feel your energy. Now think about a decision you’ve made recently that you felt good about. What happened to your energy as you thought about it? What changes did you notice?

Now what happens to your energy if you think about a decision that you don’t feel good about? Perhaps it was a decision you made out of fear or it went against your values. How did your energy respond?

Interesting isn’t it.

When you consider your energy, what would you do differently?

Every choice, every decision you make has an impact on your energy. It's easy to see the tangible, graspable outcomes but that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Your decisions have an impact and leave an imprint on your energy. I regularly check in with how I'm feeling - it's my sparkle-meter. If I don't get a sense that I'm sparkling, that I feel tingly and alive, then I know the decisions I've been making aren't serving me.

As you live your life, making both big and small decisions, pause and consider the impact on your energy. You may find you make a different decision. Imagine that.
